Lalashan Peaches, Taoyuan

Summer-only at 1,500 meters — the highland specialty of Atayal mountain villages
📍 Taoyuan · Fuxing Shangbaleng🏆 Specialty · Agricultural Produce🍑 July–August Highland Seasonal

Each year from late June, driving north along Provincial Highway 7 all the way up to Shangbaleng, you start seeing cardboard boxes and scales appearing at the doors of village homes — the Lalashan peach season has begun. At elevations above 1,500 meters in the mist-shrouded peaks, Atayal farming families head up the mountain before dawn to pick peaches, then sell them roadside and at markets by afternoon. Intensely fragrant, fine-textured, and bursting with juice — this is Taiwan's most prized highland-seasonal flavor of summer.

What are Lalashan Peaches

Lalashan Peaches are high-altitude peaches grown in the Lalashan (Daguan Mountain) area of Fuxing District, Taoyuan. The main production zones are the Atayal villages of Shangbaleng, Zhongbaleng, and Xiabaleng. At elevations between 1,100 and 1,700 meters, with moderate cloud cover and a wide day-to-night temperature range, the fruit accumulates high sugar content, developing fine flesh and a rich fragrance. Main varieties include Nakashima, Hongyu, Baifeng, and Chiyo. The harvest season runs from late June to August — a window of only about 6–8 weeks per year, making them a genuine summer-only product.

Why Lalashan? Geography and the transformation of tribal industries are the key. In the early days, Atayal villages in Fuxing District mainly grew vegetables. From the 1960s and 1970s onward, peach cultivation was introduced. The mid-altitude climate advantage helped make this one of Taiwan's most recognized peach-producing regions; Taoyuan is the nation's second-largest peach-producing county. The Ministry of Agriculture's AgrInfo portal has a dedicated "Lalashan Peach Theme Hall" covering varieties and cultivation. The production area is managed by Atayal village farmers and overseen by the Taoyuan Fuxing District Farmers' Association.

How to Eat Them the Local Way

🍑
Eat Fresh from the SourceBuying directly at the production site gives you the freshest fruit. Slightly soft to a gentle press and deeply fragrant means peak sweetness; letting them ripen 1–2 more days gives optimal flavor.
❄️
Chill for 30 Minutes FirstRefrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour before eating. The flesh cools without frosting, and the aroma stays fully intact with the best texture.
🍴
Eat Whole with the SkinLalashan peach skin is thin with minimal fuzz. Wash and eat them skin-on — the nutrients and fragrance are concentrated just below the skin; don't peel them away.
🚗
Buy Direct from ProducersPurchasing from Shangbaleng farming families or through the Fuxing Farmers' Association direct sales is the most cost-effective option, cuts out middlemen, and supports the local tribal economy.
