Turn off Provincial Highway 3 into Dahu and the roadside is lined with white plastic greenhouses; inside, row upon row of bright red strawberries hang amid green leaves. A winter trip to Dahu to pick strawberries, enjoy strawberry hot pot, and bring home strawberry wine has become a classic Taiwanese family travel itinerary. Dahu Township alone accounts for more than 80% of Taiwan's strawberry supply, making it a true "home of strawberries" and the most recognizable agricultural product Miaoli is known for.
What are Dahu Strawberries
The Honfeng variety makes up the bulk of Dahu's strawberry crop, and in recent years new varieties such as Xiangshuei, Meiji, and Lianxiang have also been introduced. Honfeng berries are round, intensely fragrant, and balanced in sweetness and acidity — ideal for both fresh eating and processing; Xiangshuei berries are longer and oval with softer flesh and higher sugar content. Dahu Township sits at around 350 m elevation, with a large day-to-night temperature swing, fertile soil, and long-term breeding and guidance from the Miaoli Agricultural Research and Extension Station, giving Dahu strawberries an advantage in both quality and scale.
According to official data from the Tourism Administration, Ministry of Transportation, Dahu Township's strawberry cultivation area and output account for approximately 80% of the national total, making it Taiwan's largest strawberry-growing area. The Dahu Township Farmers' Association established the Dahu Winery (Strawberry Culture Hall) in 1995; in addition to showcasing the history of the strawberry industry, it offers processed products such as strawberry wine, strawberry vinegar, and jam. The season runs from November through April of the following year, peaking from December to February, and draws over a million visitors annually to pick fruit.
