When most people think of red dates, they picture dry goods from northern China. But you may not know that Taiwan has its own commercial red date growing area — Gongguan Township in Miaoli. Every July and August, walk into the Shiqiang, Guandong, and Fuji areas of Gongguan and you will find date trees heavy with fruit in shades of red and green, while farm families rush to harvest. Bitten into fresh, a red date snaps with a clean, sweet crunch and no bitterness at all; once dried, it becomes the dried date used in herbal cooking. Gongguan Township is the only township in Taiwan with commercial-scale red date cultivation — rightfully called the "home of Taiwan's red dates."
What are Gongguan Red Dates
The history of Gongguan red dates can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty; it is said that early settlers carried date seedlings from the Chaoshan region of Guangdong to Taiwan, where they took root in the Gongguan Hakka villages and have been passed down for five generations or more. The variety grown is primarily an improved strain of the Indian jujube, adapted to Taiwan's subtropical climate. Flowers appear in March and April, and fruit ripens in July and August. Fresh dates are round and plump; the skin shifts from green to red, and the flesh is crisp, juicy, and can reach a sugar content above 25 degrees Brix. Once dried, the skin wrinkles and the date fragrance intensifies — the dried form can be used in herbal soups, brewed as tea, or made into red date vinegar and red date wine.
The Gongguan Township Farmers' Association lists red dates as one of the township's three major specialties (alongside fu cai and taro). Shiqiang Village, Guandong Village, and Fuji Village are the main growing areas, and the association holds an annual Gongguan Red Date Festival to promote awareness. The Miaoli Regional Agricultural Research and Extension Station has long assisted with variety selection, grafting, and pest and disease management. Taiwan's red date output is small and serves only the domestic market, making it difficult to compete on price with imported dried dates — but Gongguan red dates, as the only fresh red dates grown commercially in Taiwan, draw visitors for a rare seasonal farm experience during the harvest.
