Turn off Provincial Highway 3 into Nanzhuang and follow the Zhonggang River up into the hills; in this small town is a short lane of barely a hundred meters called Osmanthus Lane. Its narrow sides are packed with little shops, and the air carries the scent of osmanthus honey. The shops stir the osmanthus blossom wine into chilled rice dumplings, drizzle it over shaved ice, and brew it into hot tea. The golden-amber sweetness has become the most recognizable souvenir of Nanzhuang Old Street. In this mountain town known for its Japanese-era residences and Hakka culture, osmanthus blossom wine has become the memory anchor of every visitor.
What is Nanzhuang Osmanthus Blossom Wine
Osmanthus blossom wine is made by layering fresh golden osmanthus blossoms, sugar, and honey (or rock sugar) in set proportions, then sealing and maturing the mixture for several weeks to several months. The result is golden-yellow and translucent, with a rich osmanthus fragrance and sweet honey character. It can be eaten on its own, drizzled over desserts, mixed into frozen treats, or diluted with hot water to make osmanthus tea. Osmanthus has been used for a thousand years in Chinese tradition for making preserved fruit, infused wine, and pastries. Hakka villages also have a tradition of cooking with osmanthus, and Nanzhuang has developed it into a distinctive tourism product.
"Jiang Ji Flower Honey" on Osmanthus Lane in Nanzhuang is the original osmanthus blossom wine shop, crafting the recipe by a family-passed method and introducing popular items like chilled osmanthus rice dumplings — inspiring the entire lane to go into the osmanthus business. The official Nanzhuang Old Street page of the Tri-Mountain National Scenic Area Administration lists osmanthus blossom wine as a representative local specialty. Every autumn when the osmanthus blossoms (September to November), the whole mountain town of Nanzhuang is fragrant with osmanthus — the best season to experience every osmanthus-based food and drink. The shops in the lane also roll out seasonal-limited items during the osmanthus festival.
