Nanzhuang Old Street was built up against the hillside and developed into the commercial center of a Hakka settlement during the Japanese colonial period. The street retains Japanese wooden shop-house facades and red-brick buildings, brought to life by weekend markets. The Osmanthus Lane winding through the alleys is known for its planted osmanthus trees, which fill the air with fragrance every autumn. The nearby Penglai Stream Fish Sanctuary Trail offers a contrasting, quieter natural experience.
Highlights of Nanzhuang Old Street
The core section of Nanzhuang Old Street preserves old buildings constructed from the Japanese era through the early Republic of China period, including wooden shop-house facades and red-brick storefronts — one of the more complete historic streetscapes in Miaoli County. The overall layout follows the pattern of a mountain-town settlement, with the streets rising and falling with the terrain, creating a visual feel distinct from lowland old streets.
Osmanthus Lane is an informal name for the alleys around the old street lined with numerous osmanthus trees; every year from September to October the bloom season fills the air with heavy fragrance, drawing visitors who come specifically for the scent. The Penglai Stream Fish Sanctuary Trail is near the old street, with clear water and visible Candidia barbata fish; the trail is flat throughout, suited to a leisurely pace. Weekend markets center on Hakka snacks, local farm produce, and handmade goods, with the highest energy on Saturdays and Sundays.
