Xiao Wulai Scenic Area

Waterfalls, a wind-rocking stone, and a cliffside sky walkway in the Northern Cross-Island Highway valley
📍 Taoyuan · Fuxing District · Yisheng Village🏞️ Nature🔖 Xiao Wulai Waterfall · sky walkway · wind-rocking stone · elevation 400 m

Xiao Wulai Scenic Area is located in a valley beside Provincial Highway 7 (the Northern Cross-Island Highway) and is officially designated and managed by the Tourism Administration, Ministry of Transportation. The main attractions include the multi-tiered Xiao Wulai Waterfall, a large boulder that can be gently rocked by hand due to natural wind action, and a sky walkway cantilevered against the cliff face. The elevation is approximately 400 meters, with vegetation dominated by lower-to-middle-elevation mixed broadleaf forest that changes appearance through the seasons.

What to See at Xiao Wulai Scenic Area

Xiao Wulai Waterfall has a total drop of approximately 50 meters, divided into upper, middle, and lower sections that offer different viewing angles. The trail system extends from the Northern Cross-Island Highway entrance to the major attractions, with interpretive panels along the way explaining the geology and plant distribution. The wind-rocking stone is a large boulder wedged into a rocky slope; because its contact area at the base is small, applying force at a specific point produces a perceptible gentle sway — a natural phenomenon of geomorphology.

The sky walkway is a cantilevered steel platform constructed against the cliff face. The end of the walkway overlooks a deep gorge and the waterfall, with a pronounced drop to the valley floor. Some sections use grating as the walking surface, giving a strong visual sense of looking straight down. The walkway is not long overall, but the undulating gradient requires attention to energy levels and shoe grip; slippers or high heels are not suitable.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

👟
Wear Non-Slip FootwearParts of the trail are wet, and the sky walkway grating can become slippery in rain. Wear athletic shoes or hiking boots with good grip.
💧
Visit After Rain for a Fuller WaterfallOne to two days after rainfall, the volume of Xiao Wulai Waterfall increases noticeably for a more dramatic visual effect, but the trail also becomes wetter and more slippery — weigh the conditions against safety.
🕐
Allow 1.5 to 2 HoursLinking the waterfall viewpoint, the wind-rocking stone, and the sky walkway on foot, plus time for rest and photos, requires at least 1.5 hours.
🌿
Nature ObservationThe broadleaf forest along the trail is richly layered. In spring (March to May) fresh leaves unfurl, and in autumn (October to November) some tree species turn yellow, offering a different scene each season.
