At an elevation of approximately 1,212 meters, Daylily Mountain bursts into a sweeping orange-yellow bloom each year from August to September, painting the hillsides in warm color. The summit observation deck faces east, and on clear days the surface of the Pacific Ocean is visible — making this the most iconic seasonal flower-viewing spot on the Taitung East Coast and a popular starting point for trekking the Taimali mountain range.
Highlights of Daylily Mountain
Daylily Mountain falls within Taimali Township, Taitung County, situated on the southwestern foothills of the southern Coastal Range. Daylilies (hemerocallis) are an important crop for local farmers, and large-scale cultivation has created the hillside flower-sea landscape. The bloom season concentrates between mid-August and late September each year; actual flowering conditions vary with rainfall and temperature, so checking up-to-date local reports before visiting is recommended. From the summit observation deck, the coastline and the blue horizon of the Pacific stretch out in full view.
During the bloom season, different daylily varieties flower in succession along the hiking trails, displaying varying shades of orange and yellow. Farmhouses partway up the mountain sell daylily-related processed goods — such as daylily pork rib soup and dried daylilies — which make good souvenirs. Outside the bloom season, the mountain's primary forest still offers worthwhile hiking, and the area is rich in butterfly and wild bird observation opportunities.
