Mr. Brown Avenue is a farm road threading through the rice paddies of Chishang, about 1.7 km long, closed to motorized vehicles and traveled primarily by bicycle and on foot. The rice fields on both sides shift between lush green and golden yellow with the seasons, flanked by the Central Mountain Range to the west and the Coastal Range to the east — the most celebrated agricultural landscape route in the East Rift Valley of Taitung.

Highlights of Mr. Brown Avenue

Mr. Brown Avenue takes its name from a Japanese coffee brand television commercial filmed here. It is located in the Dapo section of Chishang Township's paddy fields. The road surface is gravel-paved and completely flat, with no buildings to obstruct the view, making the sightlines extremely open. The rice paddies have two growing cycles per year: the young seedling period after transplanting (approximately April–May and August–September) and the mature golden-ear period (approximately June–July and October–November) each present a different character.

The road starts near the Dapo Lake parking lot and ends at the location of the Jincheng Wu Tree (a cotton tree), another famous advertising landmark. The entire route is unshaded and can be intensely sunny in summer — the midday hours are best avoided. Bicycle rental stands at the roadside offer various types of bikes; a round trip takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Visit

🚲
Cycle the full length and backThe full 1.7 km is closed to motorized vehicles, making cycling the best way to explore. Bikes can be rented at the entrance; prices vary by operator. The full ride takes about 30 minutes.
🌾
Match the rice growing seasonThe scenery differs between the seedling stage and the mature ear stage. Exact timing depends on that year's farming schedule — checking local agricultural information in advance is recommended.
🌄
Go in the early morning or late afternoonMorning light is soft and crowds are thin; the evening sun casts a golden glow across the paddies. Both are far better for photography than the harsh midday light.
🌳
Find the Jincheng Wu TreeThe cotton tree near the end of the road — commonly called the Jincheng Wu Tree — is a popular photo spot. The tree has a beautiful shape with the Central Mountain Range as a backdrop.
