Every August, the hillsides of Golden Needle Mountain in Taimali Township, Taitung, are swallowed up by orange-yellow. At 800 meters above sea level, daylilies grow in dense sweeping patches, and before the morning mist burns off the whole mountain carries a steaming floral fragrance. The daylilies here are not just scenery — freshly picked blooms can go straight into the pan, while sun-dried daylilies are a year-round ingredient. It is one of the few crops in Taitung agriculture that is both ornamental and edible.

What is Taimali Daylily

The daylily's scientific name is Hemerocallis; the edible part is the unopened bud, also known as yellow day-lily or golden needle vegetable. Golden Needle Mountain in Taimali produces daylilies in two forms: fresh buds, which are tender and silky with a mild bittersweet flavor, suitable for quick stir-frying or blanching and dressing; and dried daylilies, which must be rehydrated in water before use and absorb broth beautifully when braised or simmered, turning soft and slippery in texture. Adding dried daylilies to a traditional pork rib or chicken soup is the most common home-cooking application.

The Taimali Township Farmers' Association is the main organization supporting production and marketing of Golden Needle Mountain's agricultural specialties. Each year during the August to September flowering season, it co-organizes the official "Daylily Blossom Festival" tourism event with the Taitung County Government, drawing large crowds who come to hike, view the flowers, and buy farm products. The mountain's moderate elevation and wide day-to-night temperature swings create growing conditions that outperform lowland farms. The Farmers' Association also promotes naturally sun-dried daylilies processed without sulfur fumigation, emphasizing food safety to enhance added value. Outside the flowering season, dried daylilies are available year-round through the Farmers' Association and e-commerce platforms.

How to eat it like a local

🌼
Buy fresh buds in August and SeptemberPurchase freshly picked buds on-site during the flowering season and cook them the same day for the best flavor. Scrambled with eggs, quickly stir-fried, or blanched and dressed — all work well and preserve the daylily's natural sweet-bitter fragrance.
🍲
Make dried daylily pork rib soupSoak dried daylilies in water for 20 minutes to rehydrate, then simmer with pork ribs or chicken. The broth turns clear and sweet — the most traditional and reliably satisfying home use of dried daylilies.
🏷️
Look for the Farmers' Association sulfur-free labelCommercial dried daylilies that have been bleached with sulfur appear especially bright in color. Farmers' Association products carry a no-additive label, and naturally processed daylilies tend to be a darker brown.
🚗
Drive up the mountain early during the flowering seasonParking on Golden Needle Mountain is limited during the festival. Plan to set out before 8 a.m. and avoid weekend and holiday peak crowds on non-workday days.
