Xiangshan Wetland stretches roughly 15 kilometers along the western coast of Hsinchu City, making it the largest intertidal wetland in northern Taiwan. At low tide, fiddler crabs wave their claws across the mudflats while mudskippers dart through the mire. A raised boardwalk lets visitors observe intertidal life up close without stepping into the mud. During migratory bird seasons the wetland becomes a prime birdwatching destination.

What to see at Xiangshan Wetland

The wetland borders Haishan Fishing Harbor to the north and is one of the few intact intertidal ecosystems surviving at the edge of an urban area. The expansive mudflats support a rich benthic community, including multiple species of fiddler crabs, mudskippers, and shellfish, while also serving as a key stopover for transiting waterbirds such as the Black-bellied Tern, Great Egret, and Great Cormorant. Official records list over a hundred bird species; the autumn-winter migration period (roughly October to March of the following year) offers the highest observation density.

A boardwalk trail runs along the shore, allowing visitors to venture above the mudflats without disturbing the habitat. At sunset the low light reflects off the mud in rich, layered tones, making it a popular time for photography. The nearby Xiangshan Fishing Harbor has fresh seafood restaurants, ideal for pairing with a half-day itinerary.
