Zengwen Reservoir is Taiwan's reservoir with the largest water storage capacity, holding up to 718 million tonnes of water, with a dam height of 133 meters. The expansive lake surface is ringed by layered mountain ranges, and the lakeside road rises and falls with the terrain, offering multiple vantage points for taking in the reservoir's scenery. Fish raised in the reservoir — including giant grouper and bighead carp — have achieved notable success, becoming well-known local ingredients for cuisine in Dapu, Chiayi.

Highlights of Zengwen Reservoir

Zengwen Reservoir was completed in 1973, formed by damming the Zengwen River. Its primary functions are agricultural irrigation, domestic water supply, and hydroelectric power generation. The dam body is located in Dapu Township; its scale is imposing, and visitors can walk along the dam crest to look out over the reservoir surface. Water levels vary noticeably with the seasons and rainfall: the lake is at its broadest during the wet season, and during the dry season sections of the reservoir banks are exposed, making the terrain contours more clearly visible.

Multiple scenic overlooks are set up along the lakeside road, each offering a different perspective from various elevations overlooking the reservoir. On clear days, mountain shadows reflected on the lake surface create rich layers of color. The reservoir nurtures various fish species, most notably giant grouper and bighead carp (commonly called "white carp"); restaurants in Dapu Township feature reservoir fish as their signature ingredient, serving freshly caught lake fish dishes — an essential culinary pairing for a reservoir visit.

Practical Information

Getting There & Timing

  • By car: head south from Chiayi City along Highway 3, through Dapu Township toward Zengwen Reservoir. The full journey takes about 1 hour 30 minutes; mountain roads are winding — drive with care.
  • No direct public transport is available; driving or renting a car is necessary. The lakeside road may be partially restricted after typhoons or heavy rain; check road conditions before departure.
  • Open year-round; spring and autumn have pleasant temperatures. Summer is hot but the high-water season scenery is spectacular; the dry winter season reveals more layered terrain along the reservoir banks.

Nearby Connections

  • The upstream area of Zengwen Reservoir leads to Danayigu Nature Park (Shanmei Village, Alishan Township) — a same-day itinerary combining Tsou indigenous community ecotourism is feasible.
  • Heading north extends to Chiayi City's Dapu Street (a settlement beside Dapu Reservoir) for lake fish cuisine before returning to Chiayi City.
