Stretching from 2,000 to 2,700 meters above sea level, the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is famous throughout Taiwan for its "Five Wonders": sunrise, sea of clouds, sunset glow, sacred trees, and the forest railway. The thousand-year-old sacred tree grove, the Sisters Pond trail, high-mountain tea gardens, and the Yoshino cherry blossoms that burst into bloom each March and April combine to form Taiwan's most iconic alpine destination.
Highlights of Alishan National Forest Recreation Area
Alishan's forests span a vertical range from tropical to warm-temperate, temperate, and cold-zone forest types, creating a richly layered ecosystem. Some of the Japanese cedar sacred trees within the park exceed a thousand years in age. The Tapian Trail, Sisters Pond, and Duigaoye Trail are the main hiking routes, varying in distance and difficulty to suit visitors of different fitness levels. The Zhushan Sunrise Platform is the best vantage point for the famous sunrise and sea of clouds; to catch the optimal moment, plan to head out well before dawn or stay overnight on the mountain.
The Alishan Forest Railway is one of the world's renowned high-mountain rack railways; the journey itself, passing through multiple climate zones, is a scenic experience. From late March to early April each year, the Yoshino cherry blossoms and their snow-like drifting petals are Alishan's most celebrated seasonal spectacle — book ahead. Alishan high-mountain teas (oolong and Jinxuan) have a distinctive flavor and are sold both within the recreation area and in Chiayi city below.
