Built in 1715 (the 54th year of the Kangxi reign), Chiayi Chenghuang Temple is a living testament to the city's founding history, with incense burning continuously for over three hundred years. The temple's grand layout and intricate wood-carving and painting craftsmanship are impressive in their own right, but the City God's lunar-July procession is Chiayi's most anticipated annual religious event, drawing worshippers and visitors alike.

Highlights of Chiayi Chenghuang Temple

First established in the Kangxi 54th year (1715), the temple is one of Chiayi's oldest, enshrining the City God for the protection of the local community. The existing structure has undergone multiple renovations and expansions; the main hall layout is stately and complete, with roof ridge mosaics and painted decorations that reflect the craftsmanship of successive generations of artisans. It is an important physical site for studying traditional Chiayi architectural craft.

The City God's procession during the lunar seventh month (Ghost Month) is Chiayi's largest annual religious event. The devotee procession stretches for kilometers amid the thunder of drums and gongs, with sedan chairs, decorated floats, and performance troupes weaving together in a vivid display of Chiayi's deep folk faith. The temple's surroundings are dense with street food vendors, and the forecourt plaza is a daily gathering point for residents — rich in incense smoke and community life.
