Chiayi City Art Museum

A Century-Old Tobacco Monopoly Bureau Reborn as Southern Taiwan's Art Hub
📍 Chiayi · East District · Guangning Street🎨 Cultural Complex🔖 Japanese Colonial Architecture · Modern Taiwanese Art · Permanent Collection

Opened in 2019 on the site of a former Japanese colonial-era tobacco and liquor bureau, the Chiayi City Art Museum centers its collection on modern and contemporary Taiwanese art. The building's facade deliberately preserves its Japanese colonial character, making every visit a cross-era cultural experience. The museum runs a permanent collection alongside rotating special exhibitions, making it the most concentrated hub of artistic energy in Chiayi.

Highlights of the Chiayi City Art Museum

The building was originally the Chiayi branch of the Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Bureau, constructed in 1936. Its gray-white pebble-washed facade and curved corner design are its defining features. When the museum opened in 2019 after adaptive reuse, the renovation intentionally preserved the original structure and historic details so that the old architectural language could coexist with modern exhibition functions. The complex comprises the main building, a plaza, and the surrounding streetscape, serving as a landmark case study in urban regeneration within Chiayi's historic city core.

The permanent collection traces the arc of modern and contemporary Taiwanese art, while rotating thematic exhibitions spotlight local artists. Chiayi has nurtured celebrated painters such as Lin Yu-shan and Chen Cheng-po since the Japanese colonial period; the museum carries forward this artistic heritage, offering a comprehensive space for interpreting Chiayi's local art history. Educational resources are also available on-site, welcoming visitors of all ages with an interest in the history of Taiwanese art.
