Jiji Bananas

The classic Beijiao flavor at the end of the green tunnel — wait for black spots before biting
📍 Nantou · Along the Green Tree Tunnel, Jiji Township⭐ Signature · Agricultural Specialty🔖 Beijiao Tainan No. 1 · Green Tree Tunnel · Dried Banana

The camphor tree green tunnel next to Jiji train station is a famous attraction at one end, with a row of banana stalls at the other. Beijiao bananas (Taiwan Banana No. 1) grown on the sun-facing slopes of Jiji valley have thin skin and high sugar content, and are considered by older generations to be the definitive authentic taste of Taiwanese bananas. The most common mistake travelers make is buying a bright yellow bunch and biting in right away — wait until the skin turns yellow with black spots, and that is when sweetness reaches its peak.

What Are Jiji Bananas

Taiwan Banana No. 1 (Beijiao) is a traditional Taiwanese variety; the fruit is medium-sized with thin skin and fine flesh, with sucrose as the primary sugar and an abundant fruity aroma — when fully ripened it can reach over 22 Brix. Jiji Township's valley topography provides long sunshine hours, and the well-draining hillside soil allows banana plants to develop deep root systems with ample nutrients. The Farmers' Association also produces dried banana (a dehydrated, concentrated version) and banana vinegar; the former intensifies the sugarcane sweetness while the latter is sweet-sour and refreshing — both use local bananas as the base ingredient.

Jiji Township Farmers' Association is the primary promotional body for local bananas; the cluster of banana stalls around the train station is a long-established part of the tourist landscape, with vendors also along the Jiji Green Tree Tunnel walkway. Bananas are available year-round with no significant off-season, though flavor is best during summer and autumn (July–October) when sunlight is most abundant. The Farmers' Association website includes descriptions of banana processed goods and lists Jiji bananas as the township's signature product.

How to Choose Like a Local

🍌
Black spots signal the right moment to eatBlack spots (sugar spots) on the skin indicate peak sweetness; a bright yellow banana with no spots has not yet fully ripened and the starch has not fully converted to sugar.
📦
Buy green bananas and ripen them at homeStalls often sell slightly-yellow semi-ripe bananas, which are ideal for taking home and leaving at room temperature for 2–3 days — sweetness and fragrance both increase as they ripen.
🧂
Dried banana is the best souvenirFarmers' Association dried bananas are made without added sugar using low-temperature dehydration, preserving the banana fragrance and chewiness and keeping at room temperature for 30 days — far more practical to take home than fresh bananas.
🚂
Ride the Jiji Line for added enjoymentTaking the Jiji Line small train adds the scenic countryside along the route as a bonus; it's about a 5-minute walk from Jiji Station to the banana stalls.

Visitor Tips

  • Ripeness varies considerably among stall bananas; pay attention to maturity when selecting — under-ripe bananas have a starchy, powdery texture and need to be taken home to ripen further.
  • Some vendors sell oversized or extra-heavy banana bunches that look impressive but may not taste as good as medium-sized bunches; standard-size clusters are the better choice.
  • Bananas bruise easily; after purchasing, avoid placing them at the bottom of a bag under other items — carry them upright or hanging to minimize damage.
