Guanshan Catholic Church was designed and built by Italian missionaries. Its exterior walls are decorated with traditional Paiwan geometric patterns, integrating the aesthetic vocabulary of indigenous peoples into modern religious architecture. It has become the most recognizable cultural landmark in Guanshan Township. Weekly masses are held regularly, with congregants consisting primarily of local indigenous residents.

Highlights of Guanshan Catholic Church

Guanshan Township is situated in the southern section of the Huadong Rift Valley, known for its agriculture — rice and pomelo are the main crops — and the township cycling trail is also a well-known leisure route in Taiwan. Guanshan Catholic Church sits in the township center of Guanshan Li. The building exterior features a white main body accented with geometric pattern bands; the design incorporates traditional Paiwan diamond motifs, hundred-pacer snake patterns, and other elements, led by Italian missionaries who dedicated decades to working in Taiwan.

The interior space of the church continues the geometric aesthetic of the exterior walls. The stained glass windows and carved wood elements also feature adapted indigenous motifs, creating a unique religious space where Catholic faith and Taiwan indigenous culture interweave. A considerable proportion of Paiwan and Amis worshippers live in the Guanshan area; weekly mass is conducted in indigenous languages as well as Mandarin. The building may be admired from outside; if you enter the church, maintain silence and avoid visiting during mass.

How to make the most of your visit

Architectural exterior readingThe geometric patterns on the exterior walls are the main highlight. Walk around all sides of the building to carefully observe how the Paiwan diamond motifs combine with elements of religious architecture.

Interior stained glass appreciationWhen the church is open, step inside to see the stained glass windows and carved woodwork. Light passing through the colored glass creates patches of colored light on the white walls — best appreciated in contemplative stillness.
