Orchid Island Tianchi Alpine Lake | Taitung Attraction

Tianchi Lake lies on the central ridge of Orchid Island at an elevation of about 548 meters. It is one of the few summit lakes found on Taiwan's outlying islands. The lake is surrounded by tropical cloud forest vegetation; when the surface is calm, it mirrors the blue sky and surrounding trees. The hike from Yeyou Village to the lake takes about 3 to 4 hours. Tianchi is one of the rare natural retreats on Orchid Island that can only be reached on foot.

Tianchi Lake is a summit lake formed against a volcanic geological backdrop. The lake surface is modest in area, but standing beside it, with tall trees on all sides and cloud and mist swirling around, the scene is entirely different from the coastal scenery along the island loop road. The central mountains of Orchid Island are in the tropical cloud forest zone, with vegetation dominated by ferns, mosses, and broadleaf trees. The area supports rich biodiversity, and the trail passes through subtropical montane plant communities rarely seen elsewhere in Taiwan.

The hiking trail begins near Yeyou Village. The one-way journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, with an elevation gain of roughly 500 meters over steep mountain paths. Since the mountain climate on Orchid Island is highly changeable and clouds and mist can roll in at any moment, an early start on clear days is recommended; afternoon cloud buildup is common and paths become slippery. Before entering the mountain area, inform your accommodation host or the community so someone knows your hiking plan. Getting there & time

To reach Orchid Island, take a ferry from Taitung (about 2 to 2.5 hours) or a small plane (about 25 minutes). Check official information for schedules; services may be cancelled in bad weather. Always build extra days into your travel plan.
The Tianchi trail trailhead is in Yeyou Village. Trail conditions can be confirmed with the Lyudao Township Office or local accommodation providers. The mountain path is slippery and dangerous in the rainy season — assess your fitness and weather conditions before setting out.

Nearby connections

The Tianchi hike is best scheduled as a standalone full day. Other days can be paired with a visit to Tao cinedkeran boat culture and an island loop ride, planning a total of 2 to 3 days.
Green Island accommodation during peak season (July to August) must be booked 1 to 2 months in advance. The best season for the Tianchi hike is October to March of the following year, when weather is more stable.
