Sanxiantai

An andesite reef island connected to the shore by an eight-arch pedestrian bridge — a showcase of coastal erosion landforms on the East Coast
📍 Taitung · Chenggong Township · Sanxian Village🏞️ Nature🔖 Eight-arch pedestrian bridge · Reef landforms · Lighthouse

Sanxiantai consists of a headland and three reef islands connected to the mainland by an eight-arch pedestrian bridge, and is one of the most iconic natural landscapes on the East Coast. The reefs are composed of andesite, with rich erosional landforms including sea caves, sea channels, and honeycomb weathering. The island has a lighthouse, and the surrounding waters are a coral reef ecosystem.

Highlights of Sanxiantai

Sanxiantai is located in Sanxian Village, Chenggong Township, and is one of the most famous coastal landform attractions on Taiwan's East Coast. The eight-arch pedestrian bridge spans the turquoise sea in a graceful white arc, and has become Sanxiantai's most visually recognizable feature. The reef island is composed of andesite, which has been sculpted over time by the waves of the Pacific Ocean into an array of erosional landforms, including sea caves, sea channels, sea stacks, and honeycomb-textured rock faces.

After crossing the bridge onto the island, you can walk the island trail around the reef, a journey of about 1 to 1.5 hours. Along the way, observe the geological features and coastal vegetation. The northern tip of the island has a lighthouse with sweeping views, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding waters. The surrounding waters have rich coral reef ecosystems; summer is suitable for snorkeling, though current conditions and relevant safety regulations should be noted.
