📍 Taipei · Wenshan District (administratively spans Xindian)🏞️ Nature🔖 Suspension bridge · rowboats · riverside walkway

Bitan is a naturally wide pool formed by the Xindian River, spanned by a suspension bridge approximately 200 meters long connecting both banks. It was one of Taiwan's well-known early outdoor leisure destinations. Visitors can explore the water by rowboat or electric boat, and the riverside walkway is pleasant for a gentle stroll. Cafes and restaurants are nearby, making it a relaxing half-day destination on Taipei's southern side.

Highlights of Bitan Scenic Area

Bitan is located in the upper reaches of the Xindian River, where the water is clear and the terrain on both banks alternates between cliff faces and gentle slopes. The suspension bridge links the east and west banks on hanging steel cables; you can feel a slight sway as you walk across, and the view from the bridge looks out over the full expanse of the pool and the surrounding mountain silhouettes. Bitan was already a well-known tourist attraction during the Japanese colonial period and continued as a popular leisure spot after the war; something of the old character can still be felt in the waterfront layout.

Rowboat and electric boat rentals are available on the water, suitable for two to three people and offering a close-up experience of the pool and cliff faces from the water's surface. The riverside walkway extends along the east bank; the entire route is flat and shaded on both sides, suitable for walking or cycling. Waterfront cafes tend to be busy on weekends, and some waterside seats are well positioned for enjoying a drink while watching the pool; the light is pleasantest in the soft hour before sunset.
