Nanxi Meilin Scenic Area

A four-season mountain destination in Tainan with plum blossoms in January–February and fireflies in summer
📍 Tainan · Nanxi District · Meilin🏞️ Nature🔖 Plum blossom season (Jan–Feb) · fireflies (Apr–May) · mountain scenery

Meilin sits in the foothills at the eastern edge of the Jianan Plain, at an elevation of roughly 400 to 700 meters, and is Tainan's most celebrated plum blossom viewing destination. Every year in January and February, white and pink blossoms cover both sides of the mountain roads in full bloom, drawing large numbers of visitors. In spring and early summer (around April to May), fireflies gather in numbers, creating another peak of nature tourism — making this a mountain destination that offers winter blossoms and spring-summer firefly watching.

Highlights of Nanxi Meilin Scenic Area

The farming in Meilin's mountain area centers on plum and citrus cultivation. When the plum blossoms are at their peak, the trees along the mountain roads are blanketed in white flowers, and the old trunks and branches have a gnarled, weathered beauty — an agricultural landscape that is visually striking in its own right. With a moderate elevation, the climate is noticeably cooler than the plains; during the plum blossom season, average temperatures run around 10 to 15 degrees Celsius, which is comparatively comfortable. The Meilin blossom season typically falls around the Lunar New Year period and represents the most concentrated plum viewing resource in southern Taiwan.

From April to May, fireflies appear in large numbers in the forested mountain area at night, their flickering lights creating a remarkable natural spectacle. During the firefly season, some local guesthouses and agritourism farms offer guided night tours. Meilin also produces well-regarded plum-based products (plum vinegar, dried plums, plum wine, and others); the farm specialty shops along the mountain road operate year-round and are popular picks for local souvenirs.

How to make the most of your visit

Buying plum specialty productsFarm specialty shops along the mountain road stock plum vinegar, dried plums, plum wine, and other plum-based products year-round. These are the most locally representative souvenir options and have a solid reputation for quality.
🥾
Mountain road hiking and viewpointsThe Meilin mountain trail has a manageable gradient, and the hiking routes connect several scenic overlooks. On clear days you can look out over the Jianan Plain. The trails are equally suitable for hiking outside the blossom season.

Practical information

Getting there and timing

  • Meilin is in Tainan's Nanxi District, about one hour from central Tainan by car. Driving is the primary way to get there. On holiday weekends during the blossom season, traffic on the mountain road can be heavy — an early start or a weekday visit is recommended.
  • The plum blossom season (roughly January to February) and the firefly season (roughly April to May) are the two peak visitor periods. Both blossom and firefly conditions are weather-dependent; check up-to-date information before you go.
  • Temperatures in the mountains drop significantly at night — bring a warm layer for firefly watching. During the blossom season, days are cool but you will be outdoors for extended periods, so carry a warm outer layer and enough water.

Nearby connections

  • Combine with Nanxi Gudan Hot Spring or Zengwen Reservoir for a full-day mountain and nature itinerary in Tainan. Zengwen Reservoir is about 30 minutes from Meilin by car.
  • Yujing District is about 20 minutes from Meilin. During the mango season (June to August), you can extend the trip to the Yujing Mango Market to pick up fresh in-season fruit.
