In 1665, Zheng Jing — son of Koxinga — established the first Confucius Temple in Tainan, which subsequently became Taiwan's earliest official center of education. The Qing dynasty set up a prefectural school here, and successive additions gave the complex its present form. The ritual courtyard in front of Dacheng Hall, with its stone-flagged terrace and steps, preserves the measured proportions of Qing-dynasty Confucian temple architecture — unusually serene among Tainan's temple clusters.
What to See at the Confucius Temple
Tainan's Confucius Temple was founded in 1665, making it the earliest Confucius Temple established in Taiwan. The Qing dynasty placed a prefectural school here, which is how it came to be called 'Taiwan's First Academy.' The complex includes Dacheng Hall, the East and West Cloisters, and Minglun Hall as its main units, each with a distinct function: Dacheng Hall enshrines Confucius, the East and West Cloisters house the associated sages, and Minglun Hall was the former lecture hall. The overall layout preserves the ritual order of a traditional Confucian temple.
The temple houses a number of imperial plaques bestowed by Qing emperors, hung in Dacheng Hall and the cloisters — important objects for studying official educational policy in Qing-dynasty Taiwan. The pan pool in front of the temple forecourt and the twin entrances of the Ritual Gate and the Righteousness Gate form a complete sequence of Confucian temple spaces. A ceremony honoring Confucius is held each year around Teachers' Day, continuing the traditional rites.
