Anping Tree House

An abandoned warehouse where banyan roots and brick walls have grown together
📍 Tainan · Anping District · Gubao Street📷 Landmark🔖 Tait & Co. warehouse · banyan co-existence · elevated walkway

After the Tait & Co. warehouse was abandoned during the Japanese colonial period, banyan trees spent decades encasing the entire building. Roots grew in through the roof, pushed out through gaps in the walls, and aerial roots hung among the crumbling brick arches. Walking inside today, you see the process by which a building has been redefined by plants — quiet and complete.

What to See at Anping Tree House

Anping Tree House was originally the warehouse of the British trading company Tait & Co., which operated out of Anping in the 19th century. After the warehouse was abandoned during the Japanese colonial period, the aerial roots and root systems of surrounding banyan trees gradually attached themselves to the brick walls and roof over the course of decades, forming the distinctive landscape of tree and building intertwined. The remnant brick arches and banyan root systems coexist — a vivid display of natural succession.

An elevated wooden walkway has been installed in the grounds, allowing visitors to walk at canopy height and look down on how the roots cover the brick wall structure. The walkway lets visitors experience the same space at different levels — lower down, you see roots and walls intertwined; higher up, you see the canopy overhead. The main Tait & Co. building nearby now houses a wax museum of Taiwan's pioneering history and can be visited alongside.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

🌿
Walk the Elevated Walkway for the Canopy ViewThe elevated wooden walkway lets you look down on how banyan aerial roots cover the brick roof structure — a completely different angle from ground level. It is worth walking at both heights.
🧱
Looking Closely at the Root-Wall IntertwiningSome brick arches have been entirely engulfed by root systems. Observing how the roots enter the brick joints gives you a sense of the long-running contest between plant force and building structure.
Morning Light Is SofterThe space is shaded by the canopy; morning light is soft and even. After midday, patches of direct sunlight become intense and affect the overall feel.
