Donggang Gongrong Market

A fishing-port hub for bluefin tuna, swordfish, and bottarga
📍 Pingtung · Donggang Township · Zhongzheng Road⛩️ Historic Sites & Temples🔖 Bluefin tuna sashimi, mullet roe (oil fish roe), fishing culture market

Donggang Gongrong Market is Donggang's most representative traditional market, located next to Chaolong Temple at the heart of Donggang's fishing community. The market revolves around seafood delivered directly from the harbor, with bluefin tuna sashimi, swordfish products, and bottarga (oil fish roe) being the most celebrated offerings — together they embody Donggang's identity as one of Taiwan's major fishing ports.

What to see at Donggang Gongrong Market

Donggang is one of Taiwan's three largest fishing ports, known for high-value species including tuna, swordfish, and red sea bream (true snapper). The market building blends traditional layout with modern renovation, with densely packed stalls and peak activity in the early morning. During the bluefin tuna season from April to June each year, the area around the market becomes a focal point of the Bluefin Tuna Cultural Festival, and the atmosphere is especially lively.

Bottarga (made from oil fish roe, distinct from mullet roe) is a specialty processed seafood product unique to Donggang — affordable and distinctively flavored, it is a popular souvenir for many visitors. The market also sells freshly sliced swordfish sashimi, a variety of fresh fish, and shrimp and crab. Some stalls offer a cook-for-you service, so visitors can buy fresh seafood and have it prepared at a nearby restaurant.
