Xiao Liuqiu (Liuqiu Island) is the only island in Taiwan formed entirely from coral reef, with an area of about 6.8 square kilometers, administratively belonging to Liuqiu Township, Pingtung County. It is known for the opportunity to observe green sea turtles up close while snorkeling. Vase Rock, with its distinctive fringing reef formation, is the island's signature landmark. The island promotes low-carbon tourism, restricting visitors from bringing scooters on board; renting bicycles or electric bicycles is the primary mode of transport.
Highlights of Xiao Liuqiu
The geology of Liuqiu Island is composed entirely of coral reef limestone, making it unique among Taiwan's outlying islands. The reef rock has been eroded by ocean waves over many years, forming distinctive landforms such as Vase Rock, the Beauty Cave, and the Black Ghost Cave. The marine coral reef ecosystem is robust, and the green sea turtle population is stable; the probability of encountering turtles while snorkeling in the reef areas around the island is relatively high. Freshwater on the island depends on groundwater and desalinated seawater, and the ecological carrying capacity is limited. The Pingtung County Government has implemented visitor quota measures; be sure to check reservation requirements before visiting.
Vase Rock is on the northern side of the island and is the most accessible landmark reef formation; tidal conditions affect the safety of close-up observation near the reef. Beauty Cave and Black Ghost Cave are groups of limestone caves with guided trails, allowing visitors to observe karst dissolution landforms. The Dafu Fishing Port on the northwest side of the island is the main departure point for boat snorkeling. It is recommended to book through licensed operators and wear rash guards to prevent sunscreen from contaminating the coral reef.
How to make the most of your visit
Practical information
Getting there and timing
- Take a boat from Donggang to Xiao Liuqiu; the crossing takes about 25 to 30 minutes. The Dong-Liu ferry route is operated by several companies, with schedules and fares varying by season. Please check the official information from each operator on the Dong-Liu ferry route; confirm departures before setting out, as sailings may be cancelled during strong winds or poor sea conditions.
- The island's visitor quota policy is continuously adjusted; during peak seasons, reservations may be required or the number of visitors may be limited. Check the latest announcements from the Liuqiu Township Office before visiting.
- It is recommended to stay on the island for at least one night to avoid the daytime tourist crowds; snorkeling in the early morning offers higher water clarity and fewer visitors.
Nearby connections
- Donggang is the transit hub for boats to and from Xiao Liuqiu. While there, you can visit the Donggang Yingwang Festival (held every three years; outside festival years, the Donglong Temple is open to visit) and sample the Three Treasures of Donggang (bluefin tuna, mullet roe, and sakura shrimp).
- Linbian Station is about 15 minutes from Donggang by car; from there, Taiwan Railways connects to Pingtung City or Kaohsiung, making onward connections to other Pingtung attractions convenient.
