Yanxiu Chaoyin (Sound of the Tidal Cave)

One of Dongyin's Eight Scenic Spots — a tidal wind cave soundscape and a cliff where black-tailed gulls nest

Yanxiu Chaoyin is one of Dongyin's Eight Scenic Spots, located on the sea cliffs on the island's northern side. When waves surge through rock fissures into a natural wind cave, compressed air produces a deep tidal booming sound that rises and falls in rhythm with the waves. The clifftop commands open views, and the nearby sea cliffs are an important breeding site for black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris). During specific seasons each year, you can observe gulls nesting in the cliff walls — a spot on Dongyin that combines both soundscape and birdwatching.

Highlights of Yanxiu Chaoyin

The name "Yanxiu Chaoyin" draws on two images: yan (swallow/seabird), referring to the seabirds that nest here; and chaoyin (tidal sound), referring to the resonant sound produced when waves surge into the rock-fissure wind cave. The cliff landform on Dongyin's northern side is complex; the granite's well-developed joints have been eroded by waves over time, forming multiple natural wind caves. The shape and depth of a cave determine the timbre of its tidal sound: in heavy seas it booms like a drum; in calm conditions there is only a low airflow hum — each visit offers a different experience.

Black-tailed gulls nest in the cliff walls of Dongyin, and during the breeding season you can observe adult birds feeding chicks. When the flock is in flight, wingspans can exceed one meter — an impressive sight wheeling above the clifftop. The clifftop here also overlooks the northern sea around Dongyin Island, a good position for watching sea surface activity and looking out toward the Chinese mainland. Bringing binoculars will greatly enhance the birdwatching experience.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

👂
Sit Quietly and Listen to the Tidal SoundThe tidal booming varies in volume with the waves. Sit at the clifftop and listen quietly, feeling the rhythmic variations of the cave's resonance — more memorable than taking photos.
🦅
Watch the Black-Tailed Gulls in FlightBlack-tailed gulls fly back and forth near the cliff walls. Binoculars allow you to clearly observe their plumage and flight posture; during breeding season you may see parent birds feeding young.
🌊
Experience the Impact on a Stormy DayDuring the northeast monsoon season, wave action is strongest and the tidal sound is loudest and most thunderous. At the same time, be mindful of cliff-edge safety — do not approach unguarded areas near the cliff.
🔭
Look Out over the Northern SeaThe clifftop view extends to the northern sea around Dongyin; on clear days with good visibility, the broad surface of the East China Sea stretches to the horizon — the best position for a full panorama of Dongyin's north coast.
