Dahan Outpost

Clifftop gun ports facing the strait — a Cold War coastal fortress commanding the shipping lane
📍 Matsu · Nangan Township · Renai Village⛩️ Historic Site / Temple🔖 Coastal cliff tunnel · artillery display · overlook of Renai Beach

Dahan Outpost sits on a sea cliff on Nangan's northern coast; tunnels were carved along the cliff face, with a row of gun ports aimed directly at the Matsu Strait, fulfilling a strategic mission to command the shipping lane during the Cold War. It is now open as a military heritage site, with artillery, ammunition depots, communication facilities, and other original fittings preserved inside the tunnels. The walkway along the site offers sweeping views of Renai Beach and the outline of Beigan Island.

What to See at Dahan Outpost

The outpost was sited on the sea cliff along Nangan's northern coast, a position that commands the entrance to the shipping lane with excellent elevated firepower. The tunnels were carved following the cliff contour, with a battery of gun ports facing the strait that could directly engage passing vessels. During the Cold War, when cross-strait traffic in the shipping lanes was fraught with tension, coastal outposts like this were critical nodes in Matsu's defensive network; Dahan Outpost is one of the more representative front-line relics on Nangan in terms of both scale and state of preservation.

The artillery, ammunition storage spaces, and communication facilities displayed inside the tunnels together present a complete picture of a front-line outpost. The walkway extends along the cliff face with multiple viewpoint nodes offering different angles onto Renai Beach, Beigan Island, and the surrounding waters. When morning or evening light falls obliquely on the sea, the scene is richly layered — an ideal time for photography. The interior of the tunnel is relatively dark; bring a flashlight.
