Mist-Shrouded Bamboo Groves, Fireflies Lighting Up the Mountain Nights of Meishan
📍 Chiayi · Meishan Township · Ruili Village🏞️ Nature🔖 Sea of Clouds · Fireflies · Bamboo Grove Trail

Ruili, at elevations between 900 and 1,400 meters, is a mountain tourism area hidden in the mists of Meishan Township in Chiayi. Quiet bamboo-lined paths, babbling streams, and firefly swarms that appear each spring turn this mountain village into a magical place after dark. It is one of the ecologically richest scenic areas in the mid-elevation mountains of Chiayi County.

Highlights of Ruili Scenic Area

Ruili is located in the eastern mountain area of Meishan Township; the terrain rises gradually from low-elevation hills to mid-elevation mountain terrain, with river valleys, bamboo groves, and tea gardens interwoven throughout. In the early morning, seas of clouds often billow up from below, creating a spectacular sight with mountain peaks rising like islands above white mist. The area features the Ruifeng Trail and several hiking routes ranging from a short 1-kilometer walk to a longer 5-kilometer route, suitable for visitors of different fitness levels.

Late March to May is the most active season for fireflies, with early April seeing the highest density. The trails at night come alive with Taiwan window fireflies and black-winged fireflies weaving through the bamboo — a rare sight in the lowlands. The bamboo groves do an excellent job of blocking light pollution, making Ruili one of the better firefly-watching spots in the Chiayi mountains. Some local guesthouses offer nighttime guided interpretation walks; ask ahead when booking.
