Miaoli Zhuolan Fresh Fruits

A fruit kingdom cradled by mountains — seasonal fruits arriving one after another year-round
📍 Miaoli · Zhuolan Township🏆 Collector's Pick · Agricultural Specialty🍇 Grapes, Asian pears, starfruit, and citrus

Zhuolan sits at the southernmost tip of Miaoli, bordering Dongshi and Xinshe in Taichung. The Daan River has carved out a mountain basin here. Surrounded on all sides by hills, with a large day-to-night temperature swing and fertile alluvial soil from the Daan River, this small township has become one of Taiwan's most celebrated "fruit kingdoms." From summer Kyoho grapes, to autumn high-graft pears, to winter starfruit and ponkan mandarins — Zhuolan has seasonal fruit coming to market year-round, making it an important source for Miaoli farm tourism and souvenirs.

What are Zhuolan Fruits

The Zhuolan Township Farmers' Association officially lists grapes, pears, starfruit, and citrus as "Zhuolan's Four Major Fruits," each with its own season and representative variety. Grapes are predominantly Kyoho, with two seasons — July–August and December–January — large-berried, high in sugar, and richly aromatic. Pears are mainly Xingxing, Fengshui, and locally high-grafted Hengshan pears, peaking in July–September. Starfruit is the soft-branch variety, harvested October–December, clean and sweet with abundant juice. Citrus includes ponkan and Murcott mandarin, hitting the market in January–March — the most popular souvenir for Lunar New Year.

Zhuolan sits at around 300–400 m elevation; the mountain basin soil formed by Daan River alluvium drains well and is mineral-rich. Long-term support from the Miaoli Regional Agricultural Research and Extension Station and the Zhuolan Township Farmers' Association keeps fruit quality consistent. The township office, the Sinorama magazine, and major agricultural media have repeatedly referred to Zhuolan as a "fruit kingdom." During grape and pear seasons, the fruit direct-sales centers and orchard pick-your-own experiences in the township are lively — a popular short-trip farm destination from central Taiwan, alongside Dongshi in Taichung and Dahu in Miaoli as another major fruit center.
