Shoufeng Papaya Milk

Fresh-blended Hualien No. 2 red-flesh papaya from the Rift Valley — sweetness brewed by abundant valley sunshine

The Shoufeng Plain enjoys ample sunlight and a large day-night temperature swing, producing some of the sweetest papayas in Taiwan. The "Hualien No. 2" red-flesh papaya, developed by the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, has thick, vibrant orange-red flesh and consistently high sugar content. Blended fresh with whole milk and not a drop of added sugar, this is the papaya milk that visitors at Dongdaemen Night Market are willing to queue twenty minutes for.

What is Shoufeng Papaya Milk

Shoufeng Papaya Milk uses the "Hualien No. 2" variety as its core ingredient. This cultivar was officially developed and registered by the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station; it is known for its thick flesh, high sugar content (reaching 14–16 Brix), and vivid orange-red color. The fresh-blend method combines whole pieces of fresh papaya with fresh milk in a blender — no sugar, no water — preserving the papaya's natural enzymes and fiber. The finished drink is a deep orange, smooth and slightly pulpy, distinctly different from the watered-down, sugar-syrup versions sold elsewhere.

Shoufeng Township is one of Taiwan's major papaya-producing areas. The local farmers' association has long guided farmers in growing "Hualien No. 2" papaya and promotes it through markets and tourism channels. The papaya milk stalls at Hualien City's Dongdaemen Night Market are where most visitors first encounter Shoufeng papaya, but locals also habitually order a cup at breakfast shops or roadside drink stands. Papaya is available year-round; summer (June–September) brings the ripest, sweetest fruit and the best flavor.

How to eat it like a local

🥛
No sugar — that's the correct wayShoufeng papaya is sweet enough on its own. The authentic way is no sugar and no condensed milk. If a stall adds sugar by default, simply say "no sugar" when ordering.
🌙
The Dongdaemen Night Market queue is worth itThe papaya milk stalls at Hualien's Dongdaemen Night Market often have queues on weekends, with most waits running about 10–20 minutes. Consistent fresh-blend quality makes the wait worthwhile.
🌅
Mornings are fasterMany breakfast shops in Hualien City offer fresh-blended papaya milk without the night market crowd, and the morning fruit is often from the freshest batch harvested the previous day.
🚜
Buy whole papayas at the Shoufeng Farmers' AssociationWhole "Hualien No. 2" papayas are available at the Shoufeng Township Farmers' Association or large supermarkets — eat them fresh or blend your own juice, at better value than the ready-made night market version.
