The dessert stalls at Yuanlin Night Market are still packed before closing. The business at zhenzhu yuanzi stalls runs not on novelty but on substance. The glutinous rice skin, fully cooked through, has a satisfying springy chew; the moment you bite through, peanut filling, sesame filling, or taro filling each comes tumbling out. This type of rice ball has been sold at Yuanlin Night Market for more than twenty years. No new flavors are needed — the old ones have long since proven their worth.

What are zhenzhu yuanzi

Zhenzhu yuanzi is the local Yuanlin name for large stuffed glutinous rice balls (tang yuan with filling). The outer skin is made of glutinous rice, enclosing a filling of toasted crushed peanut sugar, black sesame sugar, or slow-cooked taro paste. They are dropped into boiling water and cooked until they float. The skin is springy and moderately thick with a natural sweetness from the glutinous rice. Fillings are chosen by preference: peanut is the most fragrant, sesame the most mellow, taro the smoothest. They can be eaten hot or cold, and in summer some vendors also offer a version with shaved ice. They embody the range of textures found at Yuanlin Night Market.

Yuanlin City is the second-largest city in Changhua County, with a thriving night market food culture. The Juguang Road area is the heart of Yuanlin's traditional night market. Zhenzhu yuanzi here are not a unique innovation but rather a local version of traditional glutinous rice balls, with filling ratios adjusted to Yuanlin's local taste preferences. Multiple stalls have histories of more than twenty years, forming a stable customer base, with local Yuanlin residents as the primary clientele and out-of-town visitors secondary.

How to eat it like a local

🥣
Hot in a bowlA bowl typically contains three to five pieces, served in sugar water or ginger broth. In winter, the ginger broth version is most popular with locals — it warms the stomach with a pleasant sweet spiciness.
🌡️
Shaved ice version in summerSome stalls offer a summer version pairing zhenzhu yuanzi with shaved ice. The contrast between the chewy glutinous rice and the icy cold shave is an interesting experience — a distinctly Yuanlin night market way to eat it.
🥜
Order mixed fillingsThe vendor usually allows mixing different fillings in one bowl. A common three-mix order is one peanut, one sesame, and two taro — the variety of textures is part of the fun.
🌙
Night market hours onlyZhenzhu yuanzi stalls concentrate in night market hours (evening to late night). The night market area is usually not open during the day, so check operating hours before going.
