Xihu Grapes

Kyoho variety — a sweet growing area by the tidal flats

In August, the country lanes of Xihu carry a faint sweet smell of grapes. Under the trellises, bunches of Kyoho hang in deep purple clusters while farmers crouch on the ridges estimating sugar content. Xihu Township is one of Taiwan's important grape-producing areas, and Council of Agriculture statistical data shows that Changhua's Xihu ranks among the top grape-producing areas in the country. But the grapes here have never relied on reputation alone — they depend on the sugar drawn out by red earth and sunlight, and the consistent quality management guided by the farmers' association.

What are Xihu grapes

Xihu grapes are predominantly the Kyoho variety — large, plump berries with deep purple to black-purple skins and juicy flesh with a well-balanced sugar-to-acid ratio. The sandy loam soil in Xihu drains well, and the slight day-to-night temperature differential in midsummer helps the grapes accumulate sugar. Harvest generally comes in two rounds: the first around July to August, and the second around September to November. Because of climatic differences, the flavor of the two rounds differs slightly, with the second-round cooler-season fruit generally regarded as sweeter.

The history of grape cultivation in Xihu Township can be traced back to variety trials introduced during the Japanese colonial period, with the scale gradually expanding after the war. The Xihu fruit and vegetable market became an important grape distribution hub for central Changhua. The Xihu Township Farmers' Association organizes fruit-picking tourism activities each year, opening farms to the general public for on-site picking. Agricultural tourism and produce sales run in tandem, making it one of the representative cases of Changhua's agricultural tourism in recent years.

How to eat it like a local

🍇
Freshest when picked in seasonJuly to November is peak picking season. Kyoho grapes picked on-site have the highest sugar content. Off-season purchases are stored fruit and are somewhat less sweet.
🚰
Wash before eating with the skinKyoho grape skins are slightly bitter and astringent. Most people prefer to squeeze the flesh into their mouth and discard the skin. If you want to eat it with the skin on, rinse thoroughly under running water.

Buying directly from the farmers' association is the best dealPurchasing directly from the Xihu Township Farmers' Association or the fruit and vegetable market offers better prices than supermarkets and makes it easier to confirm the source. Markets typically open in the early morning.
🌡️
Do not wash before refrigeratingGrapes you bring home should not be washed in advance. Store them with the stems on in the refrigerator, where they will keep for three to five days. Wash just before eating to prevent the skin from breaking and accelerating spoilage.
