Erlin Fresh Sugarcane Juice

Beside the old sugar factory site — a freshly pressed sweet drink kept alive by an agricultural community

The sugarcane juice stall at Erlin Township's market entrance needs no sign — the sound of the iron pressing machine announces it. The Taiwan Sugar Corporation's Erlin Sugar Factory was once the most important landmark in this town. The factory has since closed, but the agricultural DNA of sugarcane cultivation remained. Fresh-pressed sugarcane juice is the most honest drink here: no added water, no flavoring. Sugarcane sweetness goes into the press, juice sweetness flows into the cup, and that is all.

What is Erlin sugarcane juice

Erlin sugarcane juice is pressed fresh from locally grown sugarcane with no added sugar, water, or preservatives. It tastes clean and sweet with a natural grassy fragrance, and the raw juice is pale green or light yellow depending on the variety and ripeness. The sugarcane variety is mostly green-skinned table cane, which is high in sugar yet retains a refreshing quality without the cloying sweetness of refined white sugar. Drinking it chilled is the standard way at summer market stalls; in winter some vendors also offer it at room temperature.

Erlin Township's history of sugarcane cultivation is directly linked to the Taiwan Sugar Corporation's raw material procurement system during the Japanese colonial period. The Erlin Sugar Factory was once an important industrial landmark in southern Changhua. After the factory closed, local farmers shifted to growing table sugarcane, and market vendors have continued to maintain this chain of agricultural memory through fresh-pressed sugarcane juice. The Erlin Township Office's agricultural promotion materials document the history of the sugarcane industry. Today's sugarcane juice stalls are a living remnant of rural food culture rather than a deliberately packaged tourist product.

How to drink it like a local

🧃
Press and drink immediatelySugarcane juice oxidizes quickly — color and flavor noticeably degrade after sitting for more than twenty minutes. Drink it right after pressing; there is no other option.
🧊
Chilled is best in summerErlin summers are hot, and chilled sugarcane juice provides immediate relief from the heat. A moderate amount of ice is best — too much dilutes both the sweetness and the grassy aroma.
🌿
Confirm it is freshly pressed, not bottledSome tourist-area vendors sell processed bottled sugarcane juice. Stalls at Erlin market mostly press it on-site with a machine — see for yourself.
🌾
Sweetest during harvest seasonSugarcane is mainly harvested from October through March of the following year. The sugar content is highest in winter and spring; early-autumn sugarcane juice is refreshing but slightly less sweet.
