The intertidal zone along the Dongshi Township coast is an important oyster aquaculture area in Taiwan. It uses the stake-and-stick farming method; rows of bamboo poles forming the oyster beds are a distinctive landscape unique to Yunlin's coast. Some aquaculture operators offer tourism experiences, allowing visitors to observe oyster harvesting operations up close and understand the full production chain of Taiwan's oyster aquaculture from sea to processing.

Highlights of the Dongshi Oyster Aquaculture Area

Taiwan's oyster aquaculture is mainly distributed along the coasts of Changhua, Yunlin, and Chiayi. The "stake-and-stick" farming method used in Yunlin's Dongshi Township is a traditional approach along Taiwan's western coast: bamboo poles are inserted at an angle into the mudflats, and oyster larvae attach to the poles to grow. At low tide, the exposed rows of poles create a distinctive visual landscape. The shadows cast by the rows of poles on the mudflat in morning or evening light are among the most recognizable landscape features of Yunlin's coast.

Following the transformation of agricultural and fisheries industries, some Dongshi Township aquaculture operators now offer tourism experience activities. Visitors can observe the full harvesting process up close — from cutting the oysters, shucking them on-site, to learning about the subsequent processing — forming a complete farm visit experience. Specific experience activities require advance contact with local cooperatives or agritourism platforms; not all operators are open on a regular basis.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

Oyster Field SceneryThe bamboo-pole oyster fields are most fully exposed at low tide; it is recommended to time your visit to coincide with low tide. Check tidal times via the Central Weather Administration's tidal forecast.

Harvest ExperienceTourism harvest experiences require advance booking; contact Dongshi Township's agricultural and fisheries units or the Yunlin County Government Agriculture Department before setting out to ask for a list of participating operators.

Fresh-from-the-Source OystersSome aquaculture operators around Longyuan Village sell direct to visitors; oysters purchased fresh can be taken home, or you can ask whether simple on-site cooking is available.

Landscape PhotographyThe best time to photograph the stake-and-stick oyster fields is in the early morning or evening after low tide; side light makes the bamboo pole shadows clearly visible, adding the richest sense of depth.

Practical Information

Getting There and Time

  • Dongshi Township has no train station; driving is the primary option. From Beigang the drive is about 30 minutes; head south along the coastal highway, Provincial Highway 17, to reach the Longyuan Village area.
  • Tourism experience activities require advance booking; if visiting on a non-holiday, confirm whether the operator is open. It is advisable to make contact at least one week in advance.
  • Wear sturdy shoes that can get dirty when visiting the oyster field area; the mudflat surface is slippery, so take care.

Nearby Connections

  • Can be paired with Taixi Seaside Park and the Sihu Taiwan Tilapia Aquaculture Area to plan a full-day Yunlin coastal fisheries landscape route.
  • Heading south from Dongshi, you can extend to Kouhu Township; Kouhu's short-necked clam aquaculture area offers another perspective on coastal aquaculture industries.
