Sankeng Old Street

A preserved Qing dynasty Hakka settlement in Taoyuan where flagstone paths and護龍 buildings coexist as they were
📍 Taoyuan · Longtan District · Sankeng Village⛩️ Historic Sites & Temples🔖 Qing dynasty Hakka settlement · natural flagstone path · ecology trail

Sankeng Old Street is one of the most fully preserved Qing dynasty Hakka settlements in Taoyuan. Natural flagstone paths and traditional hùlóng-style buildings wind along the street, maintaining the street scale of a hundred years ago. Adjacent to Sankeng Nature Ecology Park, a trail extending along the Daping Red Bridge leads through agricultural pond and vegetation landscapes, letting a visit to the old street naturally transition from historical architecture to nature walking.

Highlights of Sankeng Old Street

The Sankeng settlement was established during the Qing dynasty and became a distribution point for goods thanks to convenient water transport. Its street layout has been preserved to this day. The old street's surface is paved with natural flagstones, and multiple traditional hùlóng buildings stand on both sides, with red-brick walls and washed-stone (xuǎn shí zǐ) finishes that showcase northern Taiwan's Hakka traditional architectural character. Compared to more heavily commercialized old streets, Sankeng maintains a quieter atmosphere, making it better suited for a leisurely historical stroll.

The old street adjoins Sankeng Nature Ecology Park, which has a birdwatching trail and pond wetland — a rare natural buffer zone in the hilly terrain of Longtan. Daping Red Bridge spans the pond with a distinctive red steel structure, the most recognizable landmark around the old street and a popular vantage point for photographing pond reflections at dawn or dusk.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

🚶
Stroll the flagstone street at a slow paceThe old street is about 200 meters long. Take it slowly and look for architectural details such as roof-ridge bird-tail ornaments and window grille craftsmanship — elements that reflect northern Hakka traditional craft.
📷
Daping Red Bridge reflectionThe Daping Red Bridge creates a symmetrical reflection on the calm pond surface. The effect is best in the early morning before the mist clears; backlit light at sunset also has visual impact.
🦢
Ecology trail birdwatchingThe Sankeng Nature Ecology Park trail runs along the pond, where you can observe egrets, night herons, and other waterbirds. Aquatic plants bloom in spring and summer, with an open, comfortable view throughout.
🍡
Try the old street's brown sugar mochiA handful of traditional snack shops on the old street sell brown sugar mochi and other Hakka-style sweets. Quantities are limited and may sell out on weekends — a morning visit is recommended for the best selection.
