Green Island Sunrise Hot Spring

One of only three coastal reef hot springs in the world — soaking between the reef rocks while gazing over the Pacific
📍 Taitung · Lyudao Township · Gongguan Village🏞️ Nature🔖 Submarine Reef Hot Spring · Carbonate Spring · Globally Rare

Sunrise Hot Spring is located on the southeastern coast of Green Island and is one of only three coastal reef hot springs in the world, alongside locations in Italy and Japan. The spring vents emerge among the intertidal reef rocks and are carbonate springs. Soaking here while overlooking the open Pacific Ocean is Green Island's most distinctive natural experience.

Highlights of Sunrise Hot Spring

Sunrise Hot Spring sits near Gongguan Village on the southeastern tip of Green Island. Operators have set up open-air pools and semi-outdoor soaking facilities that hug the reef coastline, facing the Pacific Ocean. The spring is a sodium bicarbonate spring with clear water, an alkaline pH, and a natural temperature of around 50 to 60 degrees Celsius. Operators mix in seawater at the pools to maintain a comfortable soaking temperature of roughly 38 to 42 degrees Celsius. The spring vents themselves are located in the crevices of the intertidal reef rocks; natural upwelling can be seen at low tide.

Sunrise Hot Spring is named for its sunrise orientation. Soaking in the early morning is the most atmospheric experience — the Pacific shifts gradually from deep blue to golden orange as the sun rises, casting its first light across the reef rocks and the surface of the pool. This is widely regarded as one of the most restorative moments in a Green Island visit. Since Green Island is small and tourism is concentrated, weekdays or non-summer visits (outside July to August) are recommended to avoid crowds. Green Island must be reached by ferry or small aircraft; check official sources or ticketing platforms for the latest schedule and ticketing information, and monitor for weather-related cancellations.

How to make the most of your visit

🌅
Sunrise soakBook the early-morning session in advance. As the Pacific lights up gold at sunrise, the moment is the most iconic experience Sunrise Hot Spring has to offer.
🪨
Reef geology observationThe reef rocks around the hot spring are basalt. At low tide, the intertidal zone is rich with marine life; however, do not step on organisms living on the reef.
🤿
Snorkeling extensionGreen Island has rich coral reef ecosystems. Snorkeling spots such as Chaiko and Shilang are not far from Sunrise Hot Spring — a morning of snorkeling followed by an afternoon soak makes a great pairing.
🛵
Island loop connectionGreen Island's perimeter is about 17 kilometers. Riding a scooter around the island takes roughly 1 to 2 hours; Sunrise Hot Spring is on the southeastern section of the island loop route.
