📍 Taipei · Xinyi District🏞️ Nature🔖 Six Giant Rocks · sunrise and night views

Elephant Mountain stands 183 meters above sea level and is one of the accessible high-viewpoint destinations reachable on foot from within Taipei city. At the Six Giant Rocks on the ridge, you can look down on Taipei 101 and the Xinyi Special District with no obstructions, and the views at sunrise and during the night scene are each visually distinctive. The trailhead is about a 10-minute walk from MRT Xiangshan Station; the total trail length is approximately 1.7 kilometers, with a round trip taking about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Highlights of Elephant Mountain Trail

Elephant Mountain Trail is part of the Taipei Four Beasts Mountain trail system. The geology along the way is primarily sandstone, with wooden boardwalks and stone-slab steps at multiple sections. From the trailhead to the Six Giant Rocks ridge section, the elevation gain is about 150 meters at a moderate gradient that most visitors in normal health can complete. Beyond the Six Giant Rocks, there are several more viewing platforms along the ridge offering different angles over the Taipei Basin.

The Six Giant Rocks are the most distinctive feature of the Elephant Mountain ridge — several large sandstone boulders scattered along the ridgeline from which Taipei 101 appears especially prominent. At sunrise, if cloud conditions are right, you can watch the city gradually brighten in the morning light; after sunset during the night scene, the Xinyi District lighting and Taipei 101's light installations each have their own character. The trail has lighting at night, but bringing a flashlight is still recommended for safety.

How to make the most of your visit

👟
Wear appropriate footwearParts of the trail consist of stone-slab steps that become slippery after rain. Non-slip athletic shoes are recommended; flip-flops or high heels should be avoided.
🌄
Set out early for sunriseTo photograph the sunrise, check the exact time beforehand — around 5 a.m. in summer and after 6 a.m. in autumn and winter — and leave enough buffer time.
🌙
Anticipate crowds for the night viewThe area around the Six Giant Rocks is busier on weekend evenings. For more room to photograph, consider visiting on a weekday evening instead.
💧
Bring your own waterThere are no vending machines along the trail. Bring enough water before you set out; staying hydrated and wearing sun protection are especially important in summer.
