A century-old school building turned experimental art space, red-brick arcade meets modern installation
📍 Taipei · Datong District · Chang'an W. Road🎨 Cultural Venue🔖 Contemporary art

The building that houses the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (MOCA Taipei) was constructed in 1921 and originally served as the Taipei Prefecture Jiancheng Elementary School. It was converted into a contemporary art museum and opened to the public in 2001. The red-brick exterior retains the Japanese colonial-era architectural style, while the interior presents experimental and cross-disciplinary contemporary art on a long-term basis. Entry fees are relatively low.

Highlights of Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei

The MOCA Taipei building itself has aesthetic value: the red-brick exterior walls, wooden corridors, and arched arcades are well preserved, creating a striking dialogue across eras with the contemporary art installations exhibited inside. The curatorial approach leans toward experimental contemporary art, encompassing media art, performance art, and cross-disciplinary works. Compared to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum or the National Palace Museum, the programming here carries a stronger contemporary and experimental character.

The museum updates its exhibitions regularly, and some shows run for relatively short periods. It is worth checking current exhibition information before visiting. The former principal's residence beside the museum has been converted to commercial use (a café or multi-concept shop, depending on the current operator). MOCA Taipei is close to the cluster of designer brands and boutique shops near MRT Zhongshan Station, making a post-visit stroll through the creative district a natural add-on.
