Zhinan Temple was founded in the 1890s and is dedicated to the Taoist immortal Lu Dongbin. Built along the slopes of Mount Zhinan, the halls cascade upward following the terrain. From the higher levels of the temple, visitors can look out over the southern Taipei Basin. It is a stop on the Maokong Gondola line and a key node in the Muzha mountain trail network, connecting the Maokong tea area with surrounding mountain paths.

Highlights of Zhinan Temple

Zhinan Temple was established during the Guangxu reign of the Qing dynasty and is dedicated to the Pure Yang Patriarch Lu Dongbin. Because the temple follows the mountain contour, it is arranged in a multi-tiered terrace layout with stone steps linking each hall, so the pilgrimage route naturally incorporates a mountain walk. The main hall's deity statues are finely carved, and the temple draws a steady stream of worshippers year-round, with particularly large crowds during relevant lunar calendar festivals. The architecture follows the southern Fujianese temple style, with richly colored cut-and-paste ceramic ridge decorations.

The elevated observation platform at the temple offers views over Muzha, the hills of Wenshan District, and the southern edge of the Taipei Basin. On a clear day, visibility extends from the Taipei city center out to the distant mountain ridges. The Maokong Gondola Zhinan Temple Station is about a 10-to-15-minute walk from the temple, and the temple is also reachable by bus. From Zhinan Temple, trail systems extend to connect the Maokong tea area, making it one of the starting or ending points for mountain hikes.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Visit

🚡
Disembark at the gondola mid-stopYou can get off at the Maokong Gondola's Zhinan Temple Station to visit the temple, then reboard to continue to Maokong, or take a mountain trail to connect onward — offering flexible itinerary options.
🥾
Trail connection to the Maokong tea areaThere is a walking trail from Zhinan Temple to Maokong, roughly 2 to 3 kilometers. Wear hiking shoes and bring enough water.
🌅
Choose a clear day for the observation deckThe view over the Taipei Basin is best when the weather is clear; fog and rain significantly reduce visibility. Check the forecast before you go.
⛩️
Festival crowds at the templeCrowds are large on Lu Dongbin's lunar birthday and related festivals (dates vary by the lunar calendar), and the mountain trails are also more congested.
