Sicao Green Tunnel

A wetland ecology experience on a bamboo raft through mangrove waterways
📍 Tainan · Annan District · Sicao🏞️ Nature🔖 mangrove waterway · bamboo raft · wetland ecology

Inside the Sicao Wildlife Reserve runs a narrow waterway flanked on both sides by walls of kandelia and mangrove trees. A bamboo raft glides slowly through the shade. Passengers sit on the raft beneath intertwined mangrove branches, the water surface reflecting tree shadows, fiddler crabs moving across the mudflats. The journey covers about four kilometers and is one of the closest-to-pure-nature experiences Tainan has to offer.

What to See at Sicao Green Tunnel

Sicao Green Tunnel lies within the Sicao Wildlife Reserve. The natural green corridor on both sides of the waterway is formed by mangroves of two species — Kandelia obovata and Avicennia marina. This is an important coastal wetland habitat along Tainan's coast. At the narrowest points the waterway can only fit one raft at a time; the tree canopies close overhead, creating a tunnel-like visual effect.

Along the way, the wetland mudflats allow you to observe fiddler crabs, mudskippers, and other wetland creatures. In some seasons migratory birds stop here to rest. The bamboo raft journey covers approximately 4 km in total; guides typically explain mangrove ecology and the current status of the reserve along the way. The reserve's waterway system also plays roles in tidal buffering and carbon sequestration, making it an important example of coastal wetland conservation in Taiwan.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

🌿
Observing the Two Mangrove SpeciesKandelia obovata has broader leaves and visible propagules hanging down; Avicennia marina has pneumatophores poking up from the mudflats. While on the raft, look for the differences in distribution between the two.
🦀
Looking Down at Mudflat LifeFiddler crabs and mudskippers are active on the exposed mudflats at low tide. The raft moves slowly enough to observe the behavior of these wetland indicator species closely.
🕗
Morning Departure for Better LightIn the early morning, light filters through gaps in the leaves, the temperature is cooler, and it is the most comfortable time of day for the raft experience — bird activity is also easier to observe.
🎧
Listen to the GuideBamboo raft guides typically have a thorough knowledge of the reserve's ecology; asking questions can yield deeper information about wetland ecology and current conservation conditions.
