Longqi Niupu Badlands

A rugged, eroded moonscape terrain with hillsides blanketed in pampas grass in autumn and winter

The Longqi Niupu Badlands are a distinctive geological landscape widely distributed across Longqi in Tainan, shaped by long-term erosion into rugged hilly terrain with sparse vegetation and a striking, otherworldly appearance. Each autumn and winter (approximately October to December), pampas grass blooms and a sea of white plumes covers the hillsides — one of the most photographed seasonal natural scenes in southern Tainan.

Highlights of Longqi Niupu Badlands

The Longqi Niupu Badlands are located in Longqi District, Tainan City, and form part of the "badlands" terrain in southwestern Taiwan. The mudstone was pushed up from ancient seabed sediments and then eroded by rainfall. The high salt content and loose structure of the soil make it difficult for plants to grow, resulting in expansive areas of bare, rugged hillscape. This type of terrain is colloquially called "Moon World" (yuèshìjiè); Longqi in Tainan and Tianliao in Kaohsiung are the most representative areas with this kind of landform.

The Niupu Badlands Geopark offers interpretive services (confirm opening hours and guided tour availability in advance), with science education on how the mudstone terrain was formed. Each year from approximately October to December, the pampas grass enters full bloom: white plumes sway in the wind, blanketing the hilly slopes and forming a vivid contrast with the bare mudstone terrain. This has made it a well-known seasonal natural photography destination in southern Tainan, drawing large numbers of visitors on weekends.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

🌾
Autumn and Winter Pampas Grass Season (October–December)Peak bloom is roughly from late October to December. The grass looks its finest in a golden-white hue during the early morning or in backlit afternoon light. Weekends attract large crowds — weekdays or early mornings are recommended for photography.
🌋
Observing the Mudstone TerrainThe mudstone badlands can be appreciated year-round. The distinctive rugged hills and sparse vegetation create an almost alien landscape. Walking paths allow visitors to safely observe the mudstone geological structure up close.

Geopark Interpretive ServicesThe Niupu Badlands Geopark offers guided explanations of how the mudstone badlands formed and their ecological characteristics. Check opening hours and guided tour availability before you visit.

Planning Your Photography RouteWide-angle and medium telephoto lenses both produce interesting results in different ways. During pampas grass season, portrait and landscape compositions can be combined. Note that mudstone outside the paths is loose and slippery — stay on the designated trails.

Practical Information

Getting There & Time

  • From central Tainan, the drive takes about 40–50 minutes south along Provincial Highway 1 before turning into the Longqi District roads. Mountain roads are winding — daytime travel is recommended. Public transport cannot reach the site directly.
  • During the pampas grass season (October–December), parking on weekends can be extremely limited. Visiting on a weekday or early morning is recommended. Outside the pampas grass season, the mudstone terrain is still interesting to see, though it draws fewer visitors.
  • For geopark opening hours and guided tour information, check announcements from the Tainan City Government or the Longqi District Office.

Nearby Connections

  • Guanmiao Shanxi Temple is about 15–20 minutes from Longqi by car, making it possible to combine temple culture with the badlands natural landscape into a half-day route.
  • Tianliao Moon World in Kaohsiung (a neighboring municipality) can serve as an extension for comparison — a different scale and appearance of the same type of badlands terrain.
