Longluantan is one of the most important migratory bird habitats in southern Taiwan — a freshwater lake wetland of about 130 hectares on the western side of the Hengchun Peninsula. Every autumn and winter, large numbers of migratory birds pass through or overwinter here, with a rich variety of waterbird species. The site has bird-watching platforms, binocular rental services, and a nature interpretation center, making it an ideal venue for nature education with families and bird observation. It is also one of the important ecological monitoring stations managed by Kenting National Park.
Highlights of Longluantan Nature Center
The Longluantan water body and the surrounding agricultural land together form a rich bird habitat. The lake surface attracts geese, ducks, herons, and grebes, while the farmland along the lake shore attracts pheasant-tailed jacanas, Pacific golden plovers, and other farmland birds. Winter (approximately October to April of the following year) is the peak bird-watching season; at peak times, over 80,000 migratory birds have been recorded here simultaneously, across more than 200 species. Bird activity is relatively quiet in summer, but resident birds and summer migrants can still be observed.
The nature center has a multi-tiered bird-watching platform from which you can observe waterbird behavior through binoculars at a non-disturbing distance. The interpretation center provides ecological education exhibits; staff or volunteer bird guides can help identify species. During off-peak visits, fewer interpretation staff may be on site, so it is recommended to bring a bird field guide or use a bird-ID app for assistance. The roads around the lake area are flat and are also suitable for jogging or cycling while bird-watching along the way, though be mindful of the noise impact on the birds.
