Fangshan Zhongxiao Bridge Coastal View

Where the mountain range meets the strait — the most dramatic sea-cliff highway stretch on Provincial Highway 1
📍 Pingtung · Fangshan Township, Fangshan Village📷 Landmark🔖 Coastal Highway Scenery

Fangshan Township is where the southern tail of the Central Mountain Range meets the Taiwan Strait. Near Zhongxiao Bridge, the cliff face presses right against the shoreline, and Provincial Highway 1 winds along the rock wall, looking down over the mouth of the Fangshan River and the blue sea beyond. This stretch of highway is the most representative sea-cliff landscape on Pingtung's west coast — and the final stretch of west coast scenery before entering the Southern Cross-Island Highway system.

Highlights of Fangshan Zhongxiao Bridge Coastal View

The Fangshan River flows from the southern end of the Central Mountain Range and empties into the Taiwan Strait on the western side of Fangshan Village. Zhongxiao Bridge spans the Fangshan River mouth; the view from the bridge covers the valley, the river mouth, and the open sea simultaneously — a layered and three-dimensional perspective. From here, Provincial Highway 1 transitions southward into the Southern Cross-Island Highway system, and the terrain abruptly shifts from flat land to mountain coastline, creating a rapid change in landscape character.

Fangshan Township is an important production area for Irwin mangoes in Taiwan; every year from May to July the harvest is abundant. The Luoshan Wind (falling mountain wind) is another distinctive local weather phenomenon: in winter, northeasterly winds accelerate after crossing the Central Mountain Range and form a powerful wind in the Fangshan to Fenggang area. Vegetation there is low and leans into the wind, creating a distinctive plant landscape.

How to Make the Most of It

🌊
Look Down on the River Mouth and Sea from the BridgeWalk across Zhongxiao Bridge on foot; look left for the valley and mountain scenery, right for the Taiwan Strait. On a clear day, the view is expansive.
🌬️
Feel the Luoshan Wind (Winter)From October through March the Luoshan Wind is strong. Standing on the bridge or roadside you can experience Taiwan's unique topographic wind — dress for wind protection.
🥭
Buy Fangshan Mangoes During Season (May to July)From May to July, Irwin mangoes are at peak harvest. Direct-sale stands from local farms line Provincial Highway 1; prices are better than in the city — choose large, evenly colored fruit.
🚗
Drive Slowly Along Provincial Highway 1This section of Highway 1 winds along the sea wall with light traffic; slow down to enjoy the contrast of mountain and sea on both sides of the road.

Practical Information

Getting There & Timing

  • By car, head south along Provincial Highway 1 to Fangshan Township. Zhongxiao Bridge has roadside parking; do not stop randomly in a way that blocks traffic.
  • Public transport: TRA Fangshan Station is about 2 km from Zhongxiao Bridge — service is infrequent; driving or chartering a vehicle is recommended.
  • In winter when the Luoshan Wind is strong, wind force on the bridge can be intense. Cyclists should pay particular attention to the crosswind's effect on stability.

Nearby Connections

  • Continuing south, the Southern Cross-Island Highway leads to Checheng and Hengchun — a key transit zone before reaching Kenting; plan as a rest stop on a southbound route.
  • The Fenggangxi Valley in Shizi Township is east of Fangshan; turn off Provincial Highway 1 to explore the valley's Luoshan Wind vegetation landscape.
