Shuangxi Tiger Leopard Pond

A clear, little-known stream valley and waterside trail in the northern hills
📍 New Taipei · Shuangxi Taiping🏞️ Nature🔖 Stream valley, waterside access

Tiger Leopard Pond (Hubao Tan) is located in the mountain area of Taiping Village, Shuangxi District, a stream valley scenic spot within the Pingguang Creek watershed. The water is clear to the bottom and the original forest on both banks is well preserved. Compared with other popular stream valley spots in northern Taiwan, visitor numbers here are lower, preserving a quieter natural atmosphere. A waterside trail extends along the bank, making it a destination worth exploring for visitors who prefer a low-crowd natural experience.

What to see at Tiger Leopard Pond

Tiger Leopard Pond belongs to the upper Pingguang Creek watershed. The stream valley terrain is nestled between hills; the water runs clear with visible stones on the streambed, and water volume is ample in summer. Secondary forest and primary broadleaf forest intermingle in the surroundings, with rich vegetation including ferns and mosses growing on rock faces. Shade from the canopy covers the trail as you walk through. Shuangxi District is largely an agricultural community; Taiping Village is small-scale, with very limited commercial facilities.

The waterside trail follows the stream, with some sections requiring stepping across rocks to ford it. After rain, when the water level rises rapidly, do not enter the streambed area. The trail length is moderate; most visitors can complete the main section in 1 to 2 hours. This area is suitable for wading in summer (roughly June to September), but watch upstream weather conditions and water flow changes. In autumn and winter, ferns in the valley take on rich colors — good for photography.

How to make the most of your visit

💧
Stream valley walk and wadingIn summer (June to September) when water levels are moderate, you can wade in the stream. Wear non-slip water shoes. After rain or during typhoon periods, water levels surge — absolutely do not enter the stream.
🌿
Forest ecology observationFerns, mosses, and streambed ecology are rich on both sides of the trail. Bring binoculars to watch birds along the stream. Autumn and winter forest color changes are worth documenting.
📷
Stream valley light and photographyBefore 10 a.m., sunlight strikes the stream surface at an angle, giving the best contrast between water reflections and forest shade. Summer is lush and green; winter bare branches reflected in the water have their own atmosphere.
🥾
Trail hikingThe trail surface is mainly earth, with some rock-stepping sections. Wear enclosed sports shoes or hiking shoes. After rain, the path is muddy — take extra care.
