Luoshan Waterfall

A rare geological wonder in Taiwan — a white waterfall with stalactite-like deposits formed by a mud volcano
📍 Hualien · Fuli Township · Luoshan Village🏞️ Nature🔖 Mud Volcano Geology · Stalactite Deposits · Organic Agriculture Ecology

Luoshan Waterfall is located within the Luoshan Natural Ecological Village in Fuli Township. Its water source comes from a mud volcano zone rich in calcium carbonate minerals, which have accumulated over many years as white stalactite-like deposits on the waterfall face — creating a geological spectacle rarely seen in Taiwan. The surrounding area also has nature trails and an organic farming display, making this a place combining geology, ecology, and agriculture in one natural experience.

Highlights of Luoshan Waterfall

Luoshan Village has mud volcano structures beneath its surface. Mineral-rich mud water, high in calcium carbonate, seeps up through fissures. As this water feeds the Luoshan Waterfall source, the change in flow speed causes the minerals to gradually precipitate, forming the white calcium carbonate crystalline deposits — resembling stalactites — on the waterfall face. A mineral waterfall formed by a mud volcano water source is an uncommon case in Taiwan, holding both geological research and tourism educational value.

Luoshan Natural Ecological Village is known for its organic farming, with rice fields cultivated using eco-friendly methods. Nature trails through farmland and forest allow visitors to observe fireflies (late spring to early summer), stream ecology, and agricultural scenery. The mud volcano landscape at a separate display site, where bubbling mud water seeps to the surface, is another geological wonder worth visiting. The overall village environment is tranquil and well suited for a half-day nature experience.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

💧
Observing the Stalactite-Like WaterfallExamine the white mineral deposits on the waterfall face up close, and cross-reference the mud volcano water source interpretation board to understand how the calcium carbonate precipitation forms.
🌋
Mud Volcano LandscapeA separate mud volcano display site in Luoshan Village lets visitors see low-temperature mud water intermittently seeping to the surface — a non-volcanic hydrothermal landform unique to Taiwan and well worth visiting on the same trip.
🌾
Organic Farmland Nature TrailThe trail passes through organic rice paddies and forested sections. Fireflies can be observed in late spring and early summer (April to June); paddy field ecology is enjoyable year-round.
🍱
Local Agricultural MealsSome farming households in Luoshan Village offer meals made from locally grown organic rice. Advance reservation is recommended for a farm-table experience centered on organic produce.

Practical Information

Getting There & Time

  • From Fuli Township town center, follow the rural road to Luoshan Village — approximately 10 to 15 minutes by car. Roads inside the village are narrow and difficult for large vehicles.
  • The nature trail is open year-round. The best time for firefly watching is nights in April to June; contact a local guide in advance to confirm activity schedules.
  • The trail covering both the waterfall and mud volcano takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Wear non-slip footwear; the trail becomes slippery after rain.

Nearby Connections

  • Luoshan Village is approximately 15 to 20 minutes by car from Liushidan Mountain and can be combined on the same day for a Fuli Township nature-themed outing.
  • To the north is Yuli Town; to the south is Chishang Township in Taitung County — a natural itinerary node at the southern end of the rift valley.
