Danayigu is a clear mountain valley in the upper reaches of the Zengwen River, self-managed and protected by the Tsou indigenous community of Shanmei Village in Alishan Township. The successful revival of Varicorhinus barbatulus (commonly called kuhua or "bitter flower fish") stands as an important example of indigenous community-led ecological conservation in Taiwan. The park integrates Tsou traditional cultural displays with nature and ecology experiences; please familiarize yourself with tribal etiquette before visiting.

Highlights of Danayigu Nature Park

Danayigu means "valley of no worries" in the Tsou language. The Zengwen River runs crystal clear through this stretch, with every pebble on the streambed visible to the naked eye. In 1989, the Shanmei Village community began self-organizing to close the river to fishing — prohibiting catching and pollution. After decades of effort, the Varicorhinus barbatulus population gradually recovered. The density of fish in the stream today is remarkable; standing on the riverbank, hundreds of fish can be seen swimming freely with the naked eye — a rare showcase of a successful stream ecology recovery.

The park features displays and cultural explanations of Tsou traditional architecture (the kuba men's council hall), giving visitors insight into Tsou tribal organization and traditional life. The entrance area has Tsou craft goods for sale and a local agricultural produce stall. Tribal tourism here is community self-managed: visitors are asked to respect tribal norms — do not catch fish in the stream, do not disturb the ecosystem, ask before photographing tribal members, and maintain a quiet and respectful attitude.

Getting There & Timing

  • By car: from Chiayi City take Highway 18 toward Alishan, then turn onto the Alishan township road toward Shanmei Village. The full journey takes about 2 hours; mountain roads are winding — drive carefully.
  • Public transport to Shanmei Village is extremely infrequent; self-driving or a chartered vehicle is strongly recommended. Parking is available at the park; expect more visitors on weekends.
  • The park charges an admission fee (confirm current pricing with the Shanmei Community); open year-round. Roads may be blocked after typhoons or heavy rain — check road conditions before departure.

Nearby Connections

  • Chashan Village, another Tsou indigenous community, is near Shanmei Village — a two-day Alishan Township indigenous community cultural itinerary can be arranged.
  • Zengwen Reservoir is downstream from Danayigu; if approaching from Chiayi City or Tainan, a same-day combination with Dapu Zengwen Reservoir is possible, though the route is long and ample time should be allowed.
