Minxiong Dashiye Temple enshrines Dashiye (the Great Benefactor), and the Dashiye festival held in the seventh lunar month is one of Taiwan's most representative Ghost Month religious events, drawing devotees and folk religion researchers from across the island each year. The temple's founding can be traced to the Qing dynasty; the current structure is a modern reconstruction that carries the community's century-old faith memories.
Highlights of Minxiong Dashiye Temple
The Dashiye belief originates from Taiwan's folk pudu (universal salvation) culture; Dashiye is considered an incarnation of Guanyin Bodhisattva who appears during the seventh lunar month at the boundary between the living and the dead to maintain order. The Dashiye festival at Minxiong is especially grand in scale. In the days surrounding the 24th day of the seventh lunar month (Dashiye's birthday), a towering Dashiye effigy is erected in the temple plaza and religious ceremonies are performed, along with pudu rites and cultural activities, making for a solemn and impressive spectacle.
The temple itself features refined architectural craftsmanship — interior murals, deity sculptures, and dragon pillars all demonstrate considerable artistic quality. Minxiong Township is also an important agricultural and academic hub in Chiayi County (National Chung Cheng University is located in Minxiong). The surrounding area is a traditional street market with daily incense activity; the temple is not active only in July, and visiting on a regular day also offers the calm atmosphere of a traditional temple.
