Wanggong Fishing Harbor

A coastal fishing harbor where oyster-farming culture and the iron-bull cart tradition coexist
📍 Changhua · Wanggong Village, Fangyuan Township🏞️ Nature🔖 Sunset & Lighthouse

Wanggong Fishing Harbor is located on the western coast of Changhua County and is an important production area for oyster farming on the tidal flats of Taiwan's western muddy shoreline. The harbor district still preserves the traditional practice of crossing the tidal flats in iron-bull carts (hand tractors) to harvest oysters. Beside the harbor stands Fangyuan Lighthouse, at 37.4 meters the tallest lighthouse on the main island of Taiwan. The scene of the evening sun reflecting off the lighthouse and fishing harbor is one of the distinctive tourist sights along the west coast.

Highlights of Wanggong Fishing Harbor

The seabed off the Changhua western coast is gently sloping with a large tidal range, exposing wide muddy tidal flats at low tide — an ideal environment for oyster cultivation. Wanggong fishers use the bamboo-stake insertion method to farm oysters; at low tide they drive iron-bull carts across the mud flats to carry out work such as inserting stakes and harvesting. Some operators offer visitors a ride to experience oyster harvesting (advance reservation required; confirm details with local operators), giving an up-close look at the ecology and techniques of west-coast oyster farming.

Near the harbor there are several seafood restaurants and oyster stalls; freshly caught and cooked oysters are of good quality and relatively affordable in price. Fangyuan Lighthouse stands at one side of the harbor; its octagonal black-and-white striped tower has a high recognition factor. In the evening, orange-tinted sunlight plays across the tower and harbor — the most widely known photographic composition at Wanggong. At low tide you can also walk along the wooden boardwalk extending toward the tidal flats to observe mudflat ecology.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Visit

🌅
Sunset Lighthouse PhotographyAt low tide in the evening the lighthouse and sunset align perfectly. Check the day's low-tide time in advance — when the water is low the mud flat area is at its largest and the reflections are at their best.

Oyster-Harvesting ExperienceSome operators offer rides on iron-bull carts out to the tidal flats for oyster harvesting. Advance reservations with local operators are required; timing follows the low tide.
🦀
Tidal Flat Ecology ObservationAfter low tide the wooden boardwalk extends into the tidal flats, where you can observe mudskippers, fiddler crabs, and other benthic creatures. Avoid stepping on the oyster frames.
🍢
Fresh Oyster DishesRestaurants and stalls near the harbor serve oyster omelette (o-a-jian), oyster vermicelli (o-a-misua), and other dishes. More options are available at lunchtime or in the early evening; note that prices may differ between low and high season.
