Erlun Township lies on the alluvial plain on the south bank of the Zhuoshui River and is an important rice-growing area in Yunlin County; the farm paths between the fields provide a gentle route for leisurely cycling. Traditional Hokkien settlements are scattered throughout the township, and the proportion of preserved sanheyuan courtyard houses and earthen-brick old buildings is relatively high in Yunlin County. The area around Laihui Village is a quiet setting in which to experience the scale of western Taiwan's agricultural landscape.
Highlights of Erlun's Farmland
The rich alluvial soil brought by the Zhuoshui River makes Erlun a quality rice-growing area. The field landscape changes with the rice-growing season: during transplanting, the water surface reflects like a mirror; as seedlings emerge, a tender green carpet spreads across the land; before harvest, golden waves of ripe rice fill the view; and from late autumn to early spring, the fields lie fallow and the soil is turned. Farm paths crisscross the village, connecting settlements on flat terrain that poses no challenge for cycling, making it ideal for an unhurried wander.
The area around Laihui Village retains a relatively complete traditional settlement layout, with sanheyuan buildings made of red brick and earthen brick; some of the old houses are quite old, presenting the prototype of western Taiwan's rural architecture. Compared with over-commercialized tourist spots, the rural scenery here has more of an everyday character, suited to travelers who enjoy quiet observation.
