Cross the Xiluo Bridge down to the Yunlin plain and head inland along the south bank of the Zhuoshui River — rice paddies stretch all the way to the horizon, the wind rippling through the stalks like waves. This is Citong Township, one of Yunlin's rice granaries. The fertile black soil deposited by the Zhuoshui River produces rice that was designated as imperial tribute during the Japanese colonial era and has won Taiwan's Top 10 Classic Rice award repeatedly in recent years, carrying the banner for Yunlin rice.

What is Citong Premium Rice

Citong rice refers to japonica varieties grown in Yunlin County's Citong Township, centered on the Hongtian dedicated production zone — primarily Tainan No. 11 and Taichung Sen No. 71 (Yi Chuan Fragrant Rice). Growing conditions are exceptional: the black alluvial soil of the Zhuoshui River floodplain is rich in minerals; groundwater is abundant and uncontaminated; the day-night temperature differential is moderate — all of which produces full, plump grains that cook up glossy, aromatic, and notably fragrant. Cooked grains are pleasantly chewy with moderate stickiness, and cold leftovers don't harden easily, making Citong rice well-suited for plain rice, rice balls, and porridge alike. It stands as one of the most representative varieties among central Taiwan's rice crops.

Citong rice has a solid historical pedigree: it was designated as "tribute rice" during the Japanese colonial period, sent as an offering to the Japanese imperial household; in recent years the Citong Township Farmers' Association's Hongtian dedicated zone has consecutively won the national Top 10 Classic Rice award; and the farmers' association's "garlic rice" has twice appeared on the Presidential Office banquet menu. The Citong Township Farmers' Association markets under the "Citong Rice" brand, working with local small farmers and contract production zones, making it one of the best-known rice brands in Yunlin's farmers' association system. While it may not have the city-market recognition of Chishang or Fuli, for locals "eating Citong rice" is simply the most everyday rice memory of the Yunlin plain.

How to enjoy Citong Premium Rice the authentic way

🍚
Plain steamed rice showcases the aroma bestThe simplest way to eat Citong rice is to cook it as plain white rice. Use about 10% less water than usual; the rice fragrance comes through most clearly this way. Avoid pairing it with overly heavy-flavored dishes.
🧄
Try the garlic riceThe farmers' association's signature garlic rice has appeared twice on the Presidential Office menu. Cook minced garlic with white rice and a small amount of oil and salt — the aroma is rich. It's Citong rice's signature preparation.
🍙
Cold rice stays tenderCitong rice doesn't harden easily when cold and has moderate stickiness, making it well-suited for Japanese rice balls or bento boxes — a practical choice for office workers packing lunch.
🎁
Look for the farmers' association brandChoose the farmers' association's "Citong Rice" brand or Hongtian dedicated-zone contract rice — quality, provenance, and testing are all guaranteed. Avoid loose, unbranded rice of uncertain origin.
