Sanxing Township is famous for growing Yilan scallions. Sanxing scallions are cultivated in gravel-loam soil, which produces longer white stalks and a sweeter flavour; they have received a geographical indication certification from the Council of Agriculture. Several local farms are open to visitors for activities such as harvesting and pulling scallions, making this one of Yilan County's most representative rural agritourism options.
Highlights of the Sanxing Scallion Farm Experience
Sanxing Township lies on the gravel alluvial flats of the upper Lanyang River. The well-draining, gravel-rich soil results in unusually long white scallion stalks with a firm cellular structure, giving them a flavour distinctly different from scallions grown elsewhere. The geographical indication certification means that only scallions grown in specific areas of Sanxing Township may bear the name — making it one of the landmark cases under Taiwan's agricultural geographical indication system.
Farm experience activities vary by farm but commonly include guided tours of the scallion fields and hands-on harvesting or pulling scallions. Some farms also offer cooking experiences such as making scallion pancakes. Fees and opening times differ between farms; advance booking by phone is strongly recommended. Activities are richest during the main harvest season (autumn to winter, roughly October through March).
